Went to a coin auction yesterday
3 Attachment(s)
Yesterday, I went to a coin auction to see if I could snag a few bargains. It was an estate sale and he had some serious drool fuel both US, european and ancient. The marque item was a toned 1879 proof trade dollar. Only 1541 were struck by the mint. It was a goregous coin and much more than I was willing to spend. I would have given a grand for it, but starting bids were at 2k and it sold for 4500FRN. There were 4 $20 gold eagles, no special dates and AU condition and they went for $1100 to $1300. My max was 875FRN. See, I wanted a bargain. There were many silver Morgans in MS condition and maybe PL. Those went in the 400-500FRN range. I did not bid.
I did get 24 roosies for 30FRN (spot price) and quite a few are MS and the others are circulated. Have not had a chance to check dates, mint marks or grade. I got 2 proof 1962 Franklin half dollars for 15FRN. Not full bell lines, but one has beautiful toning on the obverse. Franklin has a tan!:4_1_72: Got 2 1921 Morgans for 15FRN a piece. Not bad, not great. Metal content is 13.71FRN. I bought a bag of 80 foreign coins for 10FRN for fun. I hit a small jackpot. 8 silver coins from the 1800's with about 2.25 ozs of silver from Mexico (1920), France, Belgium, Netherlands and Cuba. Yes, prior to Castro, Cuba had silver coins! Cool stuff! I also got a ton of other foreign copper, steel and aluminum coins. I have attached a few pics of the some of the more unusual purchases. The big copper coin is a Russian 1865 5 Kopeck. I placed a GIM round next to it for size comparison. HUGE, HUGE, HUGE coin. The other two are obverse and reverse of four coins, an ancient silver (Greek? maybe Cretan? - I have to research it) coin, 1748 3 Pfenning copper coin (circulated) with St Paul on the reverse carrying a sword and shield, a 1608 Netherland copper coin (between the size of a half and silver dollar) and a silver coin or medal with latin inscriptions. On the obverse shows an arm extending from a cloud? carrying a flag with a sunburst on it. As soon as I translate it, I will be able to tell more but there is a year on it 1691. A few of cool finds for you to look over. The Great Ag |

Re: Went to a coin auction yesterday
Congrats on your buys GA!
My "treasure" is an authenticated 1749 8 Reales in EF cond. I love it in that it may well ahve circulated in the U.S. at the time and after the signing of the Constitution, since the 8 Reales was a "coin of the realm" and circulated freely here as the most recognized and desirable silver coin...even after the U.S started to strike silver dollars. The 8 Reales was a larger coin and was much more readily sought compared to the "new" U.S. silver dollars. |
